BWP plywood — illustrative swatch

BWP plywood

Wood & boards

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹100–180* per sq ft (18 mm, branded)

Best for: Kitchen and vanity carcasses, anything near water

Details

Boiling-water-proof plywood (IS 303 BWP grade; IS 710 for marine) is the backbone of a modular kitchen. Ask for the IS mark and a termite-treated core — Chhattisgarh and MP monsoons are hard on cheap boards.

Avoid: Paying BWP prices for dry-room wardrobes — MR grade is enough there

Used in: modular kitchens →
Natural wood veneer

Natural wood veneer

Wood & boards

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium–high

₹90–300* per sq ft veneer sheet; polish extra

Best for: Wall panelling, statement wardrobes, bed backs, ceiling features

Details

A thin slice of real timber on plywood — every sheet is different. It needs a PU or melamine polish (often another ₹120–250 per sq ft) and an occasional re-polish over the years.

Avoid: Sink-side shutters and strong direct sun, which fades and yellows it

Solid wood (sheesham, teak) — illustrative swatch

Solid wood (sheesham, teak)

Wood & boards

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹1,800–6,000* per cu ft, seasoned (sheesham to Indian teak)

Best for: Door frames, handrails, furniture legs, solid table tops

Details

Insist on kiln-seasoned timber. Unseasoned wood cracks in the dry Raipur summer and swells in the monsoon. Imported Burma teak costs considerably more than the range shown.

Avoid: Large flat panels — they move with humidity; use veneered ply instead

Cane & rattan webbing — illustrative swatch

Cane & rattan webbing

Wood & boards

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹120–350* per sq ft (natural cane mesh)

Best for: Wardrobe and crockery shutter inserts, headboards, chair backs, light partitions

Details

Natural cane brings texture and lets storage breathe. Synthetic (PVC) cane is cheaper and handles humidity better, at the cost of some warmth.

Avoid: Kitchens, bathrooms and heavy-use seat panels without a backing

Laminate (HPL) — illustrative swatch

Laminate (HPL)

Shutter finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹35–120* per sq ft (1 mm sheet; high-gloss more)

Best for: Wardrobes, study units and kitchens on a sensible budget

Details

High-pressure laminate is hard-wearing and comes in hundreds of solid, wood and stone looks. Prefer 1 mm over 0.8 mm for shutters, and matte or suede textures to hide fingerprints.

Avoid: Cheap edge banding — water gets in at the edges, not the face

Acrylic (high gloss) — illustrative swatch

Acrylic (high gloss)

Shutter finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹120–250* per sq ft (1–1.5 mm sheet on board)

Best for: Contemporary kitchen and wardrobe shutters

Details

A deep, mirror-like gloss that makes small kitchens feel brighter. It shows fingerprints and fine scratches, so it suits careful households and upper cabinets best.

Avoid: Children's rooms and shutters right beside the hob

PU lacquer (painted finish) — illustrative swatch

PU lacquer (painted finish)

Shutter finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹350–750* per sq ft on MDF/HDHMR, incl. finishing

Best for: Handle-less kitchens, custom colours, curved and profiled shutters

Details

Sprayed polyurethane in almost any colour, matte to high gloss, with seamless edges. Chips can be touched up, but only by a skilled polisher.

Avoid: Tight budgets and timelines — it needs several coats and curing time

Lacquered & toughened glass

Lacquered & toughened glass

Shutter finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹180–450* per sq ft (thickness and colour dependent)

Best for: Kitchen backsplashes, crockery shutters, shower partitions, table tops

Details

Back-painted glass wipes clean and suits backsplashes; toughened (tempered) glass breaks into small blunt pieces, so it is the safe choice for partitions, doors and tops.

Avoid: Ordinary float glass anywhere at body height — specify toughened

Quartz (engineered stone) — illustrative swatch

Quartz (engineered stone)

Stone & marble

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹300–900* per sq ft (Indian brands to imported)

Best for: Kitchen counters and vanity tops that must stay stain-free

Details

Non-porous, so turmeric, oil and tea wipe off. Use a trivet for hot kadhais — very high heat can mark the resin binder.

Avoid: Outdoor counters and direct afternoon sun — the resin can yellow

Granite — illustrative swatch

Granite

Stone & marble

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹90–300* per sq ft (Indian granites)

Best for: Kitchen counters for heavy Indian cooking, stairs, thresholds

Details

Heat-proof, very hard and widely available — Jet Black, Tan Brown and Black Galaxy are common choices. Darker granites hide stains best; seal lighter ones.

Avoid: Unsealed light granites near oil and turmeric

Italian marble — illustrative swatch

Italian marble

Stone & marble

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
High

₹400–1,500+* per sq ft (varies by stone and lot)

Best for: Living and dining floors, feature walls, careful vanity tops

Details

Softer and more porous than granite, so it needs sealing and periodic polishing. Buy the whole quantity from one lot so the colour and veining match.

Avoid: Kitchen counters — lemon, tomato and turmeric etch and stain it

Kota stone — illustrative swatch

Kota stone

Stone & marble

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹40–90* per sq ft (material)

Best for: Verandahs, utility areas, staircases, budget floors and outdoors

Details

A dense blue-green limestone that has been a staple floor across MP and Chhattisgarh for decades. Polished Kota is cool underfoot in summer and very forgiving.

Avoid: Rooms where you want a bright, uniform look — it is naturally mottled

Vitrified tiles (GVT / PGVT)

Vitrified tiles (GVT / PGVT)

Tile & flooring

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹45–160* per sq ft (600×1200 mm, material only)

Best for: Whole-home flooring, marble looks without marble upkeep

Details

Glazed (GVT) and polished glazed (PGVT) tiles are the default Indian floor for good reason: hard, non-porous and affordable. Use 2–3 mm joints with epoxy grout for a clean finish.

Avoid: Mixing boxes from different batches — check the shade number

Engineered wood flooring — illustrative swatch

Engineered wood flooring

Tile & flooring

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹250–600* per sq ft (indicative, incl. underlay)

Best for: Bedrooms and upper-floor living rooms

Details

A real hardwood top layer on a stable ply core — the warmth of timber with far less movement than solid planks. Keep it away from standing water and mop with a damp, not wet, cloth.

Avoid: Ground floors with damp, bathrooms, kitchens

SPC flooring — illustrative swatch

SPC flooring

Tile & flooring

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹80–180* per sq ft (click-lock, installed)

Best for: Renovations laid over existing tiles, rentals, children's rooms

Details

Stone-plastic composite planks with a waterproof core. Quick to install with no breaking of old floors — a practical upgrade for older flats.

Avoid: Floors in strong direct sun by large west-facing glass

Texture paint

Texture paint

Paint & wall finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹35–150* per sq ft applied (designer finishes higher)

Best for: Feature walls, hiding uneven plaster, exteriors (exterior grade)

Details

From subtle sand finishes to lime-wash and stucco effects. Fix seepage first: no paint finish survives a damp wall through the monsoon.

Avoid: Every wall — one textured wall usually says more than four

Wallpaper — illustrative swatch

Wallpaper

Paint & wall finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹40–150* per sq ft installed (imported more)

Best for: Bedrooms, accent walls and dry rooms

Details

Vinyl-coated papers cope better with humid Indian summers and wipe clean. Always ask the installer to check wall moisture before hanging.

Avoid: Walls with any dampness, and kitchens or bathrooms

Fluted panels (WPC / MDF) — illustrative swatch

Fluted panels (WPC / MDF)

Paint & wall finishes

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹150–450* per sq ft installed

Best for: TV walls, bed backs, column cladding, reception counters

Details

Vertical flutes add rhythm and shadow without colour. WPC handles moisture well; MDF takes paint or veneer for a richer finish but must stay dry.

Avoid: Dusty, high-touch areas if no one will clean the grooves

Upholstery fabric

Upholstery fabric

Fabric & textile

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹350–2,500* per metre

Best for: Sofas, headboards, dining chairs, window seats

Details

Check the rub count (Martindale) — roughly 20,000+ for everyday seating. Performance and stain-resistant fabrics are worth the premium in family living rooms.

Avoid: Delicate weaves on sofas used daily by children or pets

Dhurries & rugs

Dhurries & rugs

Fabric & textile

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Medium

₹80–400* per sq ft (handwoven cotton to wool)

Best for: Living rooms, bedsides, dining areas over hard floors

Details

Flat-woven cotton dhurries are light and washable for the Indian summer; wool rugs add warmth in winter and soften echo in large rooms.

Avoid: Damp floors — let the floor dry fully after mopping

Cabinet hardware — illustrative swatch

Cabinet hardware

Hardware

Durability
Moisture resistance
Maintenance
Low

₹150–700* per soft-close hinge; drawer systems ₹1,500–6,000 a set

Best for: Every kitchen and wardrobe — this is what you touch daily

Details

Soft-close hinges, tandem drawer systems and corner fittings decide how a kitchen feels for the next fifteen years. Prefer stainless steel (SS 304) near the sink.

Avoid: Saving here to spend on shutters; hinges fail long before finishes do

Choosing well

How to choose materials for an Indian home

01

Start with the climate

Monsoon humidity, termites and hot, dry summers are what finishes in Chhattisgarh and MP have to survive. Put moisture-proof boards and non-porous surfaces wherever there is water, and keep veneer, wallpaper and wood floors in dry rooms.

02

Match the material to the use

A kitchen counter takes hot kadhais and turmeric; a bedroom wall takes almost nothing. Spend on the surfaces you touch every day — counters, shutters, hinges, the main floor — and save where wear is light.

03

Count maintenance as a cost

Italian marble and veneer look wonderful but need polishing; laminate and quartz need little more than a wipe. Be honest about how much care your household will give a finish.

04

Decide from samples, not screens

Look at samples together, in daylight and at night, next to your floor and wall colour. Combine them on a mood board before you commit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which materials work best for a modular kitchen in a humid city?
A dependable combination is BWP plywood carcasses, laminate, acrylic or PU shutters, a granite or quartz counter and stainless-steel hardware near the sink. See modular kitchen design or price it with the kitchen cost calculator.
Laminate or veneer for wardrobes?
Laminate is tougher, cheaper and almost maintenance-free; veneer is real wood with more depth and character but needs polishing and care. Many homes use laminate inside and veneer on the shutters you see. Our guide to laminate vs veneer vs acrylic goes deeper.
Granite, quartz or marble for kitchen counters?
For everyday Indian cooking, granite is the most forgiving: heat-proof and hard. Quartz is the most stain-proof and comes in uniform colours. Italian marble is beautiful but etches with lemon and tomato, so keep it for living areas and vanities.
What is the most practical flooring for Indian homes?
Vitrified tiles (GVT or PGVT) remain the most practical all-rounder — hard, waterproof and affordable. Engineered wood and SPC are good for bedrooms or renovations. Compare them in our flooring guide.
Are the prices on this page quotes?
No. They are indicative 2026 ranges for central India to help you plan. Actual prices depend on brand, thickness, quantity, site conditions and taxes — a quote needs your drawings and selections.
Are the swatch images exact?
Several swatches are illustrative textures rather than product photos. Always choose from physical samples in daylight — no screen shows true colour, gloss or texture.
