How to use

How to use the tile & flooring calculator

  1. Choose floor, wall or wood/vinyl. Each mode asks only for what it needs.
  2. Enter the room size in feet. For walls, add up the length of every wall being tiled and the tiling height (7 ft is typical in bathrooms).
  3. Pick your tile size. Tiles per box fills in with the usual pack for that size — check the carton or the dealer’s price list and correct it if needed.
  4. Set wastage: 5–8% for straight laying, 10–15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many corners.
  5. Read boxes, pieces and cost — material only, and a turnkey laid estimate. Skirting is cut from the same tiles, so it is included automatically.

The maths

How it’s calculated

Area = L × W (+ extra) [walls: run × height − openings] Tile area = length mm × width mm ÷ 92,903 (sq ft) Tiles = ⌈ area ÷ tile area × (1 + wastage) ⌉ Skirting = ⌈ perimeter ÷ tile length ⌉ strips, ⌊ tile width ÷ skirting height ⌋ strips per tile Boxes = ⌈ (tiles + skirting tiles) ÷ tiles per box ⌉

For wood, laminate and vinyl: boxes = ⌈ area × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage per box ⌉, and skirting is the room perimeter minus door openings, in running feet.

Material only = area bought (boxes × box coverage) × material rate. Turnkey = room area × our laid rate per sq ft, which already includes labour, bedding or adhesive and wastage (excl. GST).

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft bedroom in 600 × 600 mm vitrified tiles

  • Floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft. One 600 × 600 tile = 360,000 ÷ 92,903 = 3.875 sq ft.
  • Tiles: 120 ÷ 3.875 = 30.97, + 8% wastage → 34 tiles.
  • Skirting: perimeter 2 × (12 + 10) − 3 ft door = 41 ft (12,497 mm) ÷ 600 mm = 21 strips. Each tile gives 6 strips of 100 mm, so 4 tiles with wastage.
  • Total 38 tiles ÷ 4 per box = 10 boxes (40 tiles, 155 sq ft).

FAQ

Tile & Flooring Calculator: common questions

How many tiles are in a box of 600 × 600 tiles?
Usually 4 tiles, covering 1.44 sq m or about 15.5 sq ft. 800 × 800 mm boxes usually hold 3 tiles (20.7 sq ft) and 600 × 1200 mm boxes hold 2 (15.5 sq ft).
How much extra tile should I buy?
Add 5–8% for a room laid straight and 10–15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts or rooms with many corners and pillars. Wood and vinyl planks need about 5–10%. Keep one or two spare tiles for future repairs — shades change between batches.
Vitrified or ceramic — which is better for floors?
Glazed or double-charge vitrified tiles are denser and absorb less water, so they suit floors across the home. Ceramic tiles are lighter and cheaper and are mostly used on walls. See our flooring guide for marble, wood and vinyl too.
Can laminate or SPC flooring be used in Indian homes?
Yes in bedrooms and living areas. SPC is waterproof and copes with humidity better than laminate, which must be kept away from bathrooms, kitchens and seepage-prone walls. Both need a flat, dry floor underneath.
What does flooring cost per sq ft in Raipur or Bhopal?
Our 2026 turnkey rates, laid and excluding GST: vitrified tiles ₹90–150, large-format slabs ₹150–260, laminate wood ₹130–220, SPC ₹150–280 and engineered wood ₹350–700 per sq ft. Removing old tiles adds ₹25–45.
