Wallpaper Calculator
Find out how many rolls of wallpaper you need — counted strip by strip, the way installers do — for a feature wall or a full room, with pattern repeat and openings.
How to use
How to use the wallpaper calculator
- Measure the wall width in feet. For a whole room, add up all the walls being papered.
- Measure the height from skirting to ceiling (or to the cornice).
- Choose the roll size printed on the sample book. Most papers sold in India are 0.53 m × 10 m (about 57 sq ft); many imported papers come in 1.06 m wide rolls.
- Enter the pattern repeat from the label if the design must line up across strips.
- Read the rolls — buy them all from the same batch (the batch number is on every roll).
The maths
How it’s calculated
Drop length = wall height + 10 cm trim (rounded up to the pattern repeat)
Strips needed = ⌈ (wall area − openings) × (1 + wastage) ÷ (roll width × wall height) ⌉
Strips per roll = ⌊ roll length ÷ drop length ⌋
Rolls = ⌈ strips ÷ strips per roll ⌉
Wastage of 10–15% covers trimming at the ceiling and skirting and cutting around switches and windows. Supplied-and-hung wallpaper on our rate card costs ₹50–200 per sq ft of wall (excl. GST), depending on the paper.
Counting strips rather than dividing square feet matters: a 10 m roll yields only three full-height strips for a 10 ft wall, and the off-cut is usually too short to use. That is why a 120 sq ft wall needs three standard rolls, not two.
Worked example
A 12 ft wide, 10 ft high feature wall
- Wall: 12 ft = 3.66 m wide, 10 ft = 3.048 m high. Drop = 3.048 + 0.10 = 3.148 m.
- Wall area 11.15 m² + 10% wastage = 12.26 m². One full-height strip covers 0.53 × 3.048 = 1.615 m², so you need 8 strips.
- Strips per 10 m roll: 10 ÷ 3.148 = 3.18 → 3.
- Rolls: 8 ÷ 3 → 3 rolls. At ₹2,500 a roll that is ₹7,500 of paper; supplied and hung, ₹50–200 per sq ft × 120 sq ft = ₹6,000–₹24,000 plus GST.
- With a 64 cm pattern repeat the drop becomes 3.2 m, only 3 strips fit per roll, and you need 3 rolls.
Rolls for common walls (standard 0.53 × 10 m roll, no repeat)
| Wall width | 8 ft high | 9 ft high | 10 ft high | 11 ft high |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 10 ft | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 12 ft | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 14 ft | 3 | 3 | 3 | 5 |
| 16 ft | 4 | 4 | 4 | 6 |
| 20 ft | 5 | 5 | 5 | 7 |
| 40 ft (room 12 × 8) | 9 | 9 | 9 | 13 |
Including 10% wastage, before deducting doors or windows.
