Guide

Colour and natural light in Indian homes

The same tin of paint can look like two different colours on two walls of your home. Direction matters most: in central India the sun travels across the southern sky for most of the year, so south-facing rooms get strong light, north-facing rooms soft indirect light, and west-facing rooms the harsh afternoon glare of a Raipur or Bhopal summer.

How window direction changes paint colour
Windows faceThe lightColours that workBe careful with
NorthSoft, even and cool all day; little direct sunWarm whites, warm greys, ochre, terracotta, yellow-leaning greensCool blue-greys and stark white — they turn flat and chilly
EastBright, warm morning sun; dimmer and cooler by eveningMost colours — check them under your evening lamps tooVery dark walls if the room is mainly used at night
SouthStrongest, most consistent sun, deep in winterCooler or deeper shades: sage, blue-grey, teal, stoneVery pale colours that wash out; glaring bright yellows
WestMild mornings, hot orange glare in the afternoonCool, soft shades: sage, soft blue, grey-green, off-whiteHot reds and oranges on the sunlit wall

Artificial light changes colour too. Warm-white lamps (2700–3000 K in living rooms, 2700 K in bedrooms) flatter warm palettes; kitchens and studies usually get cooler task light (3000–4000 K). Decide on bulbs before you decide on paint — the lighting calculator helps.

The 60-30-10 rule

60% dominant colour (walls, large surfaces), 30% secondary (furniture, curtains), 10% accent (cushions, art, a feature wall). Every palette here is built that way: a main wall colour, a secondary for a wall or the larger soft furnishings, and one accent. The ceiling and trim colour and the wood tone tie it together.

Colour, climate and upkeep

  • Monsoon damp: fix seepage before you paint, and use anti-fungal emulsions in bathrooms, kitchens and on walls that face the rain. More in monsoon-proof interiors.
  • Heat: lighter colours on sun-facing exterior walls reflect heat; inside, cooler shades on west walls make rooms feel more comfortable in May and June.
  • Dust and little hands: washable emulsions are worth the small premium in living rooms and kids’ rooms.
  • Air quality: choose low-VOC paints, especially for bedrooms and nurseries, and ventilate for a few days after painting.

Vastu colour associations

Many families like to consider Vastu Shastra when choosing colours. The associations below are the ones most commonly cited; they vary between practitioners and are a matter of tradition rather than science, so use them alongside light, function and taste.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose paint colours for a north-facing room?
North light is soft and cool, so lean on warm undertones: warm whites, oat, sand, ochre, terracotta or yellow-leaning greens. Cool greys and blue-whites tend to look flat and chilly. The quiz does this automatically — choose “North” and it swaps in a warm white for cool palettes.
What is the 60-30-10 colour rule?
60% dominant colour (walls, large surfaces), 30% secondary (furniture, curtains), 10% accent (cushions, art, a feature wall). The quiz labels each colour with its share so you can apply it directly.
Matt or satin paint for a living room?
A washable matt or low-sheen emulsion is the usual choice: it hides wall imperfections, does not glare, and can still be wiped. Keep satin for kitchens, bathrooms and doors, and gloss or PU for woodwork and grilles.
Are these hex codes the same as paint shades?
No. Hex codes describe colours on a screen, and every paint brand mixes its own shades. Take the hex code to your paint shop and ask for the closest shade in their fan deck, then paint a large test patch — screens and lighting both change how a colour looks.
Which colours are suggested for a bedroom in Vastu?
Vastu tradition commonly associates the south-west (often the master bedroom) with earthy tones such as beige, peach and soft brown, and suggests calm, light colours for bedrooms in general. These are traditional associations rather than rules — see our Vastu guide for interiors or try the Vastu checker.
How much paint will I need?
Use our paint calculator — it works out litres and coats from your room size, minus doors and windows.
Can I save a palette?
Yes. “Save palette” stores it in My Boards on this device (no account needed), alongside images and materials you save elsewhere on the site.
