Paint Calculator
Work out how many litres of paint and primer you need — and which cans to buy — for one room or a whole 1–5 BHK home, with doors, windows and wastage taken care of.

How to use
How to use the paint calculator
- Pick a method. Measure room by room for accuracy, or choose whole home and enter your carpet area for a quick estimate.
- Enter each room’s length, width and height in feet, with the number of doors and windows. Tick “ceiling” if it is being painted too.
- Choose the paint type and coats. Coverage fills in automatically — change it to match the figure on your chosen product’s label.
- Check the primer box for new plaster, fresh putty or a big colour change.
- Read the result: litres, the cheapest mix of 1, 4, 10 and 20 litre cans, the material cost, and a turnkey painting estimate that includes labour.
The maths
How it’s calculated
Wall area = 2 × (L + W) × H − doors − windows
Paint area = wall area (+ L × W if ceiling)
Litres = paint area × coats ÷ coverage × (1 + wastage)
Primer (L) = paint area ÷ primer coverage (110) × (1 + wastage)
For the whole-home method we use the same rule as all Jainify estimates: walls + ceilings to paint ≈ 3.5 × carpet area after doors and windows (about 1 × carpet area of that is ceilings).
Coverage of 100–140 sq ft per litre per coat is typical for emulsions on smooth, primed walls; primer covers about 100–120 sq ft per litre. Cans are chosen to cover the litres at the lowest typical cost (larger packs are cheaper per litre).
The turnkey figure multiplies the paint area by our published rate card — for example ₹18–24 per sq ft for premium interior emulsion with putty, primer and two coats — including labour, excluding GST.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft bedroom with a 10 ft ceiling
- Walls: 2 × (12 + 10) × 10 = 440 sq ft. Less one door (3 × 7 = 21) and one window (4 × 4 = 16) = 403 sq ft.
- Add the ceiling (12 × 10 = 120) → paint area 523 sq ft.
- Emulsion, 2 coats at 120 sq ft per litre: 523 × 2 ÷ 120 = 8.72 L, + 10% wastage = 9.59 L → buy 1 × 10 L.
- Primer: 523 ÷ 110 × 1.1 = 5.23 L → buy 1 × 4 L + 2 × 1 L.
- Turnkey with premium emulsion (₹18–24 / sq ft): about ₹9,414–₹12,552 plus GST.
For a whole 2 BHK of 900 sq ft carpet area: 900 × 3.5 = 3,150 sq ft of paint area and roughly 58 litres of emulsion for two coats; turnkey ₹56,700–₹75,600 with premium emulsion.
Coverage and typical prices by paint type

| Interior emulsion (premium) | 100–140 sq ft | 2 | ₹300–450 / L |
| Interior emulsion (luxury, washable) | 100–140 sq ft | 2 | ₹500–700 / L |
