Guide

How modular kitchen cost is calculated

Kitchen makers in India price by the running foot (rft) — the length of cabinet along the wall. Base cabinets cost the most because they carry drawers, the sink and the hob; they sit under a worktop 600–650 mm (2′0″–2′2″) deep at 850–900 mm (2′9″–2′11″) finished height. Wall cabinets are shallower (300–350 mm (1′0″–1′2″)) and cheaper; lofts above them cheaper still. On top of the boxes come the shutters, the hardware that makes them open and close, the countertop, and any pull-out accessories or appliances.

This calculator builds the price exactly that way: base rft × (carcass + shutter rate), plus wall units at their own rate, lofts, tall units, hardware per running foot, countertop per square foot, and fixed prices for accessories and appliances. Every rate is in the table further down.

What moves the price most

  • Shutter finish — PU lacquer shutters cost ₹2,800–₹3,800 per rft against ₹1,100–₹1,500 for laminate.
  • Hardware tier — premium European drawer systems cost about 5 times basic channels (₹2,800–₹4,000 vs ₹600–₹900 per rft), and are worth it on the drawers you open daily.
  • Countertop — quartz (₹600–₹1,100 per sq ft) is about 3 times the price of granite (₹200–₹350).
  • Extras — lofts, tall pantry units and corner solutions add storage, and cost.

Standard kitchen dimensions
DimensionTypicalWhy
Worktop height (finished)850–900 mm (2′9″–2′11″)Elbow height minus ~100 mm. 850 mm suits most users; add 25–50 mm for taller cooks.
Worktop depth600–650 mm (2′0″–2′2″)600 mm takes standard appliances; 650 mm adds a back ledge for jars.
Base unit height (carcass, without legs and top)720 mm (2′4″)Standard factory module; legs 100–150 mm make up the rest.
Wall unit depth300–350 mm (1′0″–1′2″)Deep enough for plates, shallow enough not to hit your head.
Worktop to underside of wall units550–650 mm (1′10″–2′2″)Lower end for shorter users; keep 650 mm+ above the hob zone.
Hob to chimney bottom650–750 mm (2′2″–2′6″)Follow the chimney maker; Indian high-heat cooking favours 700–750 mm.
Aisle — one cook1000–1100 mm (3′3″–3′7″)Clear floor between facing counters / counter and wall.
Aisle — two cooks1200–1500 mm (3′11″–4′11″)Lets one person pass behind another holding a hot pan.
Landing space beside hob300–450 mm (1′0″–1′6″)Each side, for setting down vessels.
Landing space beside sink450–600 mm (1′6″–2′0″)Both sides ideally; at least one side.

Work triangle: Each leg 4–9 ft, the three legs together 13–26 ft, and no full-height unit or island corner cutting a leg. Use the optional check at the end of the calculator. All our planning rules are on the design standards page.

Planning tips for Indian kitchens

  • Waterproof the wet zone. Use BWP ply or an aluminium skirting base under the sink — kitchen floors get mopped daily.
  • Plan the chimney first. Hob, chimney and its duct route decide where the wall units can go.
  • Give groceries a tall unit. A full-height pull-out pantry keeps dry groceries in one place, visible at a glance, and frees the counter.
  • Choose stain-proof surfaces near the hob. Turmeric and tadka splashes mark porous stone and pale matt finishes.
  • Use the loft for seasonal storage — pickle jars, extra utensils, festive serveware.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a modular kitchen cost in Raipur or Bhopal?
For a typical L-shaped kitchen with 8 + 6 ft of base cabinets, this calculator gives about ₹95,900 – ₹1.3 L with BWR ply, laminate shutters, basic hardware and granite; ₹2.2 L – ₹3.3 L with BWP ply, acrylic, branded hardware, quartz, a loft and a tall unit; and ₹3.2 L – ₹4.9 L for PU lacquer with premium hardware and full accessories. All figures exclude appliances and GST.
What is the price of a modular kitchen per running foot?
In this calculator a running foot of base cabinet — with its share of wall units, hardware, countertop and accessories — works out to roughly ₹6,900–₹9,100 at the essential spec, ₹15,900–₹23,300 at premium and ₹23,200–₹35,200 at luxury. Comparing quotes per running foot only works if they include the same things, so always ask what each rate covers.
How do I measure running feet for my kitchen?
Measure along each wall where the base cabinets will sit, in feet. For an L-shape, add both walls; for a U-shape, add all three. Leave out door openings, the gap for a free-standing fridge, and any wall you will not put cabinets on. The calculator assumes wall units over about ${Math.round(K.wallUnits.full.f * 100)}% of that length once the window and chimney are allowed for — change it under step 3.
BWR or BWP plywood — which should I choose for the kitchen?
BWR (IS:303) is fine for most cabinets. Use BWP / marine ply (IS:710) at least under the sink and anywhere near water, and consider it for the whole kitchen in older buildings that see monsoon seepage. HDHMR is a good moisture- and termite-resistant board alternative; avoid MDF and particle board under the sink.
Granite or quartz countertop?
Granite is natural, heat-tolerant and the economical choice in central India. Quartz is engineered, non-porous and uniform in colour, so it resists turmeric and oil stains better, but at ${range(K.counter.quartz.r)} per sq ft against ${range(K.counter.granite.r)} it costs ${times(ratio(K.counter.quartz.r, K.counter.granite.r))} as much, and it should not take a hot pan straight off the flame.
How long does a modular kitchen take to install?
Once the design and finishes are signed off, factory production usually takes 2–3 weeks and on-site installation about a week, followed by the countertop, sink and appliances. Civil changes such as moving plumbing or electrical points should be finished before measurement.
