Guide

How wardrobe cost is calculated

Wardrobes are priced by the front area — width × height in square feet. A 6 ft wide, 7 ft high wardrobe is 42 sq ft. That area is multiplied by the rate for the carcass (the body, shelves and partitions) and by the rate for the shutters on the front. Hinges or sliding tracks, a loft, and any internal accessories are added on top.

Three choices drive most of the difference between quotes: the board (pre-laminated particle board up to marine plywood), the shutter finish (laminate up to PU lacquer or glass), and the fittings (basic up to premium European soft-close systems). Sliding wardrobes add a track system and usually framed, slightly costlier shutters.

Planning the inside

  • Keep the depth at 560–600 mm (1′10″–2′0″) for hinged doors and 600–650 mm (2′0″–2′2″) for sliding ones, so hangers clear the shutters.
  • Fix the rod for long hanging — kurtas, sarees on hangers, dresses — at 1650–1750 mm (5′5″–5′9″) from the floor. For shirts, a double hang with the lower rod at 1000–1100 mm (3′3″–3′7″) doubles the space.
  • Put drawers at waist height and lofts for things you need a few times a year.
  • Leave a section for sarees or folded stacks — open shelves or pull-out baskets work better than deep fixed shelves.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wardrobe cost per square foot?
With this calculator’s rates, a hinged wardrobe in BWR ply with laminate shutters works out to about ₹1,210–₹1,610 per sq ft of front area including its loft. Acrylic, veneer and PU finishes, sliding systems and premium fittings raise that; pre-laminated board lowers it.
What does a 6 × 7 ft wardrobe cost?
A 6 ft wide, 7 ft high hinged wardrobe with a 2 ft loft comes to roughly ₹62,500 – ₹82,500 at an essential spec, ₹1 L – ₹1.4 L at premium and ₹1.3 L – ₹2 L at luxury, excluding GST.
Hinged or sliding wardrobe — which is better?
Hinged doors are cheaper and let you see the whole wardrobe at once, but need 750–900 mm (2′6″–2′11″) of clear space in front. Sliding doors save that space and suit compact bedrooms, but need a slightly deeper carcass (600–650 mm (2′0″–2′2″)) and cost more for the track system and framed shutters.
Which plywood is best for a wardrobe on an external wall?
Walls that face the weather can carry monsoon damp. Use BWP / marine plywood or HDHMR there, keep a small gap or a laminate backing between the wall and the carcass, and fix seepage before the wardrobe goes in. Termite treatment of the wall before installation is worth doing in older buildings.
Is the loft worth adding?
Usually, yes. A loft of about 2 ft adds a lot of storage for suitcases, quilts and seasonal clothes at a lower rate than the main wardrobe, and it closes the dust-collecting gap to the ceiling.
How long does a wardrobe take?
Factory-made wardrobes typically take 2–3 weeks after the design is frozen, and a day or two per wardrobe to install. Site-made carpentry takes longer and depends on finish.
