Vastu Direction Checker

Choose a room and the direction it sits in to see what traditional Vastu Shastra says — favourable, acceptable or best avoided — and simple, no-demolition ways to work with it.

How to use

How to use the vastu direction checker

  1. Find the centre of your home on the floor plan (or stand there) and note north using a phone compass. Phones can be off near steel and appliances, so check twice.
  2. Pick the room or element — entrance, kitchen, bedrooms, pooja room, toilet, stairs, water tanks.
  3. Tap the direction the room lies in, seen from the centre. The grid colours show how every direction is rated for that room.
  4. Read the guidance and remedies. Most are about arrangement inside the room — where the hob, bed or desk goes — not about moving walls.
  5. Copy or share the result to discuss with your family or designer.

The maths

How it’s calculated

There is no formula here — the checker looks up widely followed traditional guidance. Vastu divides a plan into eight directions and a centre (Brahmasthan), each linked with an element or deity:

  • North-east (Ishanya) — Considered the most sacred zone, linked with water and spiritual energy. Kept light, clean, low and open.
  • South-east (Agneya) — The zone of Agni, the fire element — the classic place for the kitchen.
  • South-west (Nairutya) — The earth element and stability. The heaviest, most enclosed part of the house — the head of the family’s zone.
  • North-west (Vayavya) — The air element (Vayu) and movement — guests, storage of grain, toilets and vehicles.
  • Centre (Brahmasthan) — The heart of the plan, ideally kept open, light and free of heavy structure, toilets or stairs.

Interpretations differ between practitioners and regional schools. Where they disagree, we show the more common view as “acceptable” rather than “avoid”.

Worked example

A kitchen in the north-east of a flat

Many apartments in Raipur and Bhopal have kitchens wherever the plumbing stack allows — often not the south-east. For a north-east kitchen, traditional Vastu says avoid, but practitioners commonly suggest working within the room:

  • Move the hob to the kitchen’s own south-east corner and arrange it so the cook faces east.
  • Keep the sink and hob apart.
  • Keep the kitchen’s north-east corner light — drinking water or the purifier suits it.

None of this needs breaking a wall, and all of it also makes for a well-planned kitchen. See our Vastu for home interiors guide for more.

FAQ

Vastu Direction Checker: common questions

Which direction is best for the main entrance as per Vastu?
North, north-east and east are traditionally considered the best directions for a main entrance, with west and north-west acceptable. South-west and south-east entrances are usually avoided. Practitioners also look at the exact segment (pada) of the wall.
Where should the kitchen be as per Vastu?
South-east is the traditional ideal, as it is the zone of Agni (fire); north-west is the usual alternative. If your kitchen is elsewhere, placing the hob in the kitchen’s south-east corner and cooking facing east is the common suggestion.
Is Vastu scientific?
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture. Some of its advice coincides with good climate-responsive design — morning light from the east, heavier walls against the hot south-west sun, kitchens with good ventilation — but its spiritual explanations are a matter of belief rather than science.
Can Vastu defects be fixed without demolition?
Mostly, yes. Rearranging furniture, moving the bed or hob within a room, changing the direction you face, adjusting colours and lighting, and keeping certain corners clear are the remedies most practitioners suggest first.
Which direction should we sleep in?
Traditional guidance favours sleeping with the head towards the south or east and avoids the head towards the north. Comfort, a quiet wall and a view of the door matter just as much.
Does Jainify design homes with Vastu in mind?
Yes, when clients ask. We plan layouts that respect Vastu preferences where practical and explain the trade-offs where a flat’s structure limits them. Book a consultation to discuss your plan.
